Early Years Foundation Stage

Mr Hoyle

Welcome to Class R

We are excited to welcome you to your first year at Diggle School!

The Reception year is an exciting time for both parents and children. During this year we will all work together to ensure that your child will develop a love for learning, which they will carry with them for the rest of their school journey. We provide a nurturing and exciting learning environment to give all of our children the opportunity to grow and develop into happy and confident learners. We understand that children learn best when they are interested and intrigued. Therefore, from the spring term we choose topics based on the children’s interests and allow them to choose where their learning will take them.

In Reception, we follow the EYFS Gov. framework and Development Matters (2021), which assesses and builds on child development from birth to five. There are 7 areas of development, 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas, these are:

  • Communication & Language

  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development

  • Physical Development

  • Literacy

  • Numeracy

  • Understanding the World

  • Expressive Art & Design

How we at Diggle School support and build skills in each of these areas of development can be seen in our EYFS Curriculum Map and through our topic mats. This half term’s topic is: ‘Who Am I?’.

Information for Parents / Carers

How is my child assessed in EYFS?

In Reception, we will record all your child’s fantastic learning in a physical learner journey book and on an online platform called SeeSaw.

SeeSaw is a secure online Learning Journal to record photos, observations and comments, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, to build up a record of your child’s experiences during their time with us. This system allows us to work with parents and carers to share information and record the children’s play and learning in and outside of the classroom. Tapestry is a website which can be accessed on a computer or laptop, and also on any Apple or Android device such as a tablet or smart phone. Parents will be provided with a consent form and log in details at the start of Reception.

Literacy & Maths

In Reception, we use the Ruth Miskin; Read, Write Inc scheme for phonics and early reading. In Mathematics, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme, along with KS1 and KS2 to provide a cohesive approach to mathematics across the school.

Below are links for current parents, to access information delivered in the Early Year Workshops (Autumn term 2022) – which help parents to understand how we teach Early Maths & Phonics, Early Reading and Writing in Reception, alongside some useful resources.

Physical Education

In Reception, PE is taught on a Tuesday, each week, with Amy from City in the Community. Please make sure your child comes to school dressed in their outdoor PE kit, as we always do PE whatever the weather. Children will remain in their kit throughout the rest of the day.
